Dobbins Chapel on the Move

The Dobbins chapel is towed down the flight line, past the control tower, on its way to the Clay Army National Guard Camp on the south side of the Dobbins Air Reserve Base runway, Ga., March. 17. The over 130 ton load is supported by several heavy steel beams, wood cribbing, and three hydrostatic dolly assemblies which are all towed by a heavy-duty front-end loader. To meet post-9/11 security requirements, new construction of a perimeter road and parking lot at the chapel site dictated the chapel must be removed. The private, non-profit Dobbins Chapel Foundation, 94th Airlift Wing and Georgia National Guard arrived at a solution at no cost to the government, to move the historic chapel across the base.
