New flags fly at Dobbins memorial Published April 7, 2016 By Staff Sgt. Alan Abernethy 94th Airlift Wing Public Affairs DOBBINS AIR RESERVE BASE, Ga. -- If you’ve noticed an extra pop of color in the flags flying at the POW-MIA Memorial Park here, you can thank the Dobbins Chiefs’ Group and the base Thrift Store. The DCG recently raised seven new flags at the site, which were purchased in part from Thrift Store profits, said Chief Master Sgt. Gerald Milbourne, DCG secretary. Nancy Black, Dobbins Thrift Store manager, was instrumental in the process and ensured the base had a replacement for all flags at the memorial.Milbourne explained the flags need to be replaced every year due to weathering and fading. The Thrift Store has provided financial contributions to buy new flags for the last few years.“This was a collaborative effort to honor the POWs and MIAs,” added Milbourne. “It’s the responsibility of the Chiefs’ Group to maintain the flags at Memorial Park; we appreciate the Thrift Store staff’s willingness to support the project.”The Thrift Store staff is mostly made up of retired military members' spouses, said Black.“Each of our husband’s was in a different branch, so it’s nice to see them all represented with a flag,” she added. The flag display at the memorial includes an American flag, POW-MIA flag and a flag for each U.S. military service branch. The memorial is located at the corner of Atlantic Avenue and Fourth Street. The Dobbins Thrift Store is open every Thursday, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and on Saturdays of drill weekends during the same hours. It is located at 1323 Dozer Circle, around the corner from the memorial.
