Command chief’s view: leadership changes Published July 28, 2015 By Staff Sgt. Alan Abernethy 94th Airlift Wing Public Affairs DOBBINS AIR RESERVE BASE, Ga. -- Change is coming to the 94th Airlift Wing and Chief Master Sgt. Lyndon Tubbs, 94th AW command chief, has a clear vision on his role during this time. With Col. Brett Clark, 94th AW commander, retiring at the end of July and Col. Brent Merritt, 94th AW vice commander, taking command of the wing for an interim period, it is the command chief’s job to keep the wing’s enlisted force on track and ready for new challenges, Tubbs said. “Everyone needs to have an open mind and be receptive to the new ideas that the new commander will bring,” Tubbs said. “During the transition we need to focus on being the best we can.” Spending time face-to-face with Airmen in every wing organization is the best way to ensure the priorities of the commander and the enlisted force are fully synced, Tubbs added. “Once I understand the direction the new commander wants to take us in, I must ensure that those vision changes are trickling down to the enlisted members; through the group and squadron commanders, first sergeants and groups such as the First Four, Rising Six, and Top Three,” said Tubbs. The mission doesn’t change with a new wing commander; however, the “method of attack” often does, said retired Chief Master Sgt. Wendall Peacock, former 94th command chief. Peacock was welcomed back to Dobbins Air Reserve Base to participate in Clark’s retirement ceremony held during the July drill weekend. “The command chief must instill the commander with confidence that the wing has a solid enlisted force,” said Peacock. “All wings are unique and have their own nuances – it’s important for the two to discuss this.” From a commander’s perspective, a command chief is responsible for all things related to quality of life and the professional development of the enlisted force, Clark said. Additionally, they must lead the first sergeants and maintain an accurate awareness of the unit’s morale. Tubbs has served as the 94th AW command chief since March 2015, and directly succeeded Peacock, who retired in 2014.
