Shonda Hayes

Job title: Medical Administrative Asst.
Years of service: Military, 6 Civilian, 10

What does your job entail?
I track unit funds, medical/non-medical supply expenditures and activities. I also maintain timecards for full time staff.

Why did you join the military?
My favorite uncle was in the Air Force. He died while I was in high school, so soon after I graduated I made the decision to leave Pine Bluff, Ark., and follow his footsteps.

Where did you work prior to the 94th Aeromedical Staging Squadron? I worked at a hospital in Pine Bluff Ark. as a Health Administration Clerk. I was also a Traditional Reservist at Tinker AFB, Okla. I have always loved the military, but had to balance my career with raising my daughter and school.

What is one of your proudest moments? I performed hearing exams for all branches of service on base I was responsible for making sure that program was up to par.

What do you do for recreation? I like to travel. My daughter and I traveled to Puerto Rico last year. I just like to have fun. Period.

What's your favorite movie? White House Down. It's a great mix of action, comedy, and suspense.

Why are you participating in BYKTWD? I believe its a fun event for children and gives them a semi behind-the-scene look at what their parents do every day when they come to work, and it exposes them to what goes on the military installation.

How old is your daughter? 12

What did she enjoy most about BYKTWD?
She really enjoyed the displays by the 94th Security Forces Squadron and the Dobbins Fire Department. She was trying to find the start button to drive the fire trucks. She found the button, but not the keys, so it didn't quite work out! She also really enjoyed the dodgeball game, which definitely tired her out.

What did you enjoy most about BYKTWD? I liked getting out and seeing everybody. I really enjoyed the fire trucks and equipment. I also liked watching the dodgeball games, even though I found out that it's not exactly a spectator sport. I still ran from the balls even though I wasn't playing.

What does your daughter think about you working on a military base? She loves it.

What advice would you give to a junior enlisted person? Stay focused on what you originally came in for and make the best of it. Keep your mind on your purpose and don't' get discouraged by what you see around you. Also, learn to take care of your business personally. Get the help you need, but don't depend on anyone else to take care of it. Be proactive.

Tell us an interesting fact about yourself.
I don't like walking in grass. At Basic Military Training, if we walked in the grass, the Military Training Instructors would yell, "Get off the grass!" I guess that stuck with me. I also still make my bed with hospital corners and fold my laundry like I was taught in BMT. I loved BMT.
