Wright-Patterson Air Force Base has the Air Force Marathon, held annually in September. Now, Dobbins has the Falcon 5-k, scheduled to be held on Dec. 8 at 9 a.m.

This race has been two years in the making, by Senior Master Sgt. Florencio "Larry" Lopez, 22nd Air Force additional duty first sergeant, Dobbins Top 3 project officer.

"The goal of this it to promote physical fitness, fun, camaraderie and spirit de corps," said Lopez. "Everyone's job on this base is to support what's on the runway. That day it will be, not just aircraft, but all of us."

This race is slated to be held on the Dobbins ARB flightline, beginning at Base Operations, going west on the runway, then following the taxiway back east, according to Lopez. There will be at least three water stops, manned by the First Four, Dobbins' junior enlisted group.

There will be awards for the fasted male, female, and relay team. Each relay team competing will consist of three Airmen from the same squadron.

Lopez has hopes that this event will grow over the next years to include the local sister service units, the local community and the rest of the Air Force Reserve Command. A half-iron man veteran, Lopez also hopes this race will become an annual event celebrating our reserve heritage while enjoying a unique experience of running on the flightline.

"This event has taken the entire Dobbins community to come together," said Lopez. "Without great mentors, and wing leadership support, this 5k would not be possible, they saw the potential and after reviewing the plan, gave their full support."

Registered members will get a goodie bag that includes a race number, a dry-fit shirt, water and bananas. The proceeds will be recycled back into the Dobbins Emergency Fund used for assisting Airmen in times of need.

The Top 3 regularly gives away cash to members who find themselves in a difficult financial situation. Also Big Peach Running will be out on race day, and the Top 3 will have, as a guest speaker, a Hawaii Ironman Triathlete finisher.
