EOD received the call after police identified it as a Civil War era shell and contained it in a vessel. "A lot of footlockers are full of souvenirs, small mortar rounds to land mines," said Senior Master Sgt. Matthew Hill, 94th EOD flight chief. "We average one of these calls a month." The EOD team took the shell to a police site five miles away, placed it in a three feet hole, and blew it up, making a six foot wide hole. Civil War shells are found in Georgia every year. Hill noted that whenever one is discovered, EOD should be notified. "As long as construction occurs in downtown Atlanta, there is a strong likelihood that these artillery projectiles will keep turning up," said Hill.
