Summer Safety Tips Published April 23, 2014 94th Airlift Wing Safety Office DOBBINS AIR RESERVE BASE, Ga. -- The summer is upon us. The 94th Airlift Wing Safety Office offers some tips to keep you safe, while enjoying fun in the sun: Sun Safety 1. Drink plenty of water, non-carbonated and non-alcoholic drinks. 2. The sun's rays are the strongest between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. 3. When choosing a sunscreen, look for the words "broad-spectrum" on the label. The sunscreen will screen out both ultraviolet B (UVB) and ultraviolet A (UVA) rays. 4. Use a sun protection factor (SPF) of at least 15. 5. Put on sunscreen 30 minutes before going outdoors. The sunscreen needs time to work on the skin. Swimming Safety. 1. Learn to swim. 2. Never mix water and alcohol or other drugs. 3. Always swim in a designated swimming area. 4. Never leave children without adult supervision. If you are babysitting, you are the adult. 5. Swim parallel to the shore. If you swim out too far, you may be too tired to swim back. 6. Never swim alone. 6. If you are not sure if an area is safe for swimming, do not swim there. 7. Stay clear of boats. They take time to change direction, and the operator(s) may not even see you. 8. Avoid turbulent waters. 9. Do not dive into unknown water or into shallow breaking waves. 10. Never swim if danger flags are flying. 11. Do Not struggle if seized with a cramp, but raise your arm for help, float and keep the affected parts of your body perfectly still. 12. Wear hard-soled shoes when walking the shoreline or wading. 13. Be aware that standing water left in buckets, wading pools, bathtubs, toilets, etc. It can be dangerous to toddlers.
