A candle is lit, signaling the start of the memorial service for Senior Airman Jessica Hardeman, member of the 94th Security Forces Squadron.

Jessica was the victim of a domestic violence crime almost a year ago, on October 22, 2013. The service was a dedication to Jessica's memory, and to all who have suffered from domestic violence.

Throughout the service, remarks were made regarding Jessica's life and character.

"She was my middle child," said Angela Hardeman, Jessica's mother, "She was always sickly, but that never stopped her from trying to be the strongest. She always tried to take care of me."

Although Jessica passed last year, SFS members all consider her still as part of the unit.

"Jessica is still working in our lives here," said Lt. Col. Timothy Martz, 94th SFS commander. "We must appreciate one another here, and be thankful for our unit, team and camaraderie."

The memorial service was followed by a domestic violence awareness walk which took place along the running trail at Dobbins Air Reserve Base, Georgia starting across from the Security Forces Squadron building.

"It was a coincidence that Jessica died this way when she did," said Hardeman. "October is domestic violence awareness month."

Domestic violence is a crime that occurs throughout the military, and claims the lives of thousands.

"It is the second most unreported crime in the military, next to sexual assault," said Brandy Newsome, 94th Airlift Wing sexual assault response coordinator.

Domestic violence is a crime that traumatizes not only those who suffer directly, but also affects the family and friends of those individuals.

"The way that Jessica died was the worst," said Hardeman. "But, now I am able to help those who are in the same position: mothers, sisters and brothers are all affected."
