Program offers reservists rides to base Published Aug. 19, 2008 By Master Sgt. Nicole Brown Public Affairs DOBBINS AIR RESERVE BASE, Ga. -- Working to meet the needs of the Dobbins Air Reserve Base community, the Family Readiness Center has developed a new program to help those with transportation issues. After meeting with first sergeants and some of the Airmen they had referred to Family Readiness , the need for a new ride share program was born, said Angela Pedersen, Family Readiness director. The idea for the ride share program was then presented to the base Community Action Installation Board and the proposal was put into action. The program is designed to provide rides for people who are having problems with transportation to unit training assemblies. Rising fuel costs, a vehicle in need of repair or simply lacking a ride are reasons Airmen may come to the Family Readiness Center to sign up for the ride share program. Located outside the Family Readiness Center on the first floor of Building 838, room 1410, is a bulletin board with a map of zones reservists may commute from. Once the zone a reservist lives in and the need for a ride or the desire to carpool is identified, the Family Readiness Center can make a match based on other Airmen who have signed up for the program, Ms. Pedersen said. This program has many benefits. In light of rising fuel costs, having the option to carpool will help those trying to budget their money better. Also, carpooling to work helps emit fewer toxins into the atmosphere. Finally, rather than not being able to fulfill their obligation to their unit for something as simple as transportation, reservists can call or come by the Family Readiness office and help will be provided.
