Thrift store offers treasures at bargain prices Published Aug. 14, 2009 By Master Sgt. P.N. Brown Public Affairs DOBBINS AIR RESERVE BASE, Ga. -- "One man's trash is another man's treasure" is the philosophy that has brought out shoppers from all over to enjoy the bounty. It's like a yard sale under one roof. Where is this shoppers' paradise? It's the Dobbins Thrift Shop. The shop, which is open on Thursdays and during the Unit Training Assembly Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., is run by the Dobbins Officers Wives' Club. It has been open since November 1984 and is a non-profit organization dedicated to support local charities. It is located across the parking lot from the Services Rental Center. Every year the shop donates money to various charities like Dobbins' own POW/MIA Memorial Park, to the United Servicemen's Organization and the Special Olympics to name a few. There are even two scholarships that are offered by the shop's generosity. The scholarships are offered at Kennesaw State University and Southern Polytechnic University for military members and their families. According to Chairperson Nancy Black, the shop is always in need of merchandise to consign. People who consign items will receive an 80-20 split with the thrift store. Consignors can set their own prices on items. Once the item sells, the money is noted on the sellers account. Then, the checks for the consignors 80 percent are cut once a month and can be picked up at the shop. Variety and value can always be found in the thrift store. Consignors bring in everything from baby furniture to clothing, household items to shoes and more. And according to Mrs. Black there is always a need for new merchandise. Reservists and employees are encouraged to stop by the Thrift Store to see what items are currently on sale. The all volunteer staff will be ready to greet shoppers with a smile.
