Dobbins observes Energy Awareness Month Published Oct. 23, 2009 By Public Affairs DOBBINS AIR RESERVE BASE, Ga. -- October is Energy Awareness Month. This year's theme, Energy Solutions... Fueling the Missions, highlights the importance of energy to our overall missions to Fly, Fight, Win and supports the Air Force energy strategy to reduce demand, increase supply and change our culture. Secretary of the Air Force Michael B. Donley and Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. Norton Schwartz announced their initiative in a service-wide memo they released Sept. 15. Dobbins Air Reserve Base kicked off its energy awareness campaign shortly after. "Our goal is to reduce our energy consumption 20 percent by 2020," said Joseph E. Pollard, chief of engineering, 94th Civil Engineering Squadron. "The way we consume energy not only impacts our economy, but our health as well." Some examples of ways personnel can conserve energy are switching off unnecessary lights and equipment, using efficient ENERGY STAR® products and compact fluorescent light bulbs, drive fuel-efficient and alternative fuel vehicles and performing proper leak detection and pressure tests on equipment and following "green" principles. Energy managers will continue to push initiatives through posters, brochures and the base website. "Energy savings not only impact the workplace, but your home as well," said Pollard. It will take a commitment from everyone to achieve our energy goals. Through teamwork and a little discipline we make lasting energy improvements for our base and our lives."
