Senior Master Sgt. Philip LaRue

Home Town:   Sharpsburg, Ga.

Years served in the military:  28 years

Time at Dobbins:  26 years

What is your job title and what are your responsibilities?
I am the Propulsion Flight Chief.  My duties include the day-to-day operation of the engine and propeller repair sections. My most important responsibility is to ensure that the people working for me have what they need to accomplish their jobs--whether it's ordering a particular tool; ensuring that they have personal protective equipment, or making sure they are getting their correct pay.

What attracted you to the maintenance career field?
I enjoy tinkering with mechanical things (bikes, cars, etc.) and I've always liked airplanes. The two just seemed like a good fit.

What is  most rewarding about your job?

It's knowing my team got the aircraft in the air on time.

What do you find challenging about your job?
It is dealing with the different personalities of the people who work within and outside of my section.

What do you enjoy outside of your career?
I enjoy hiking and camping with my family.

As a flight chief what inspires you most about your Airmen?
I am inspired by their can-do attitudes. I know it sounds cliché but everyone in my section has a great attitude when it comes to their jobs. My team members rarely complain about doing their work.  They always seem to find a way to overcome any obstacle thrown at them.

What makes your career field stand out from  other career fields in the Air Force?
Without us, more so than any other maintenance career field, the aircraft can't fly. We put the "go" in cargo.

Have you ever deployed during your career?
I've deployed numerous times in my career.  My most recent deployment was in March 2009 with the 440th Maintenance Group from Pope Air Force Base, N.C.

How does your family support you in your career?
I've missed the things many Airmen miss due to job responsibilities--birthdays, anniversaries and school functions. My family has always understood. They've always said, "go and do what you signed up for -- we're proud of you."
