Col. Steven Slick, 94th Mission Support Group commander, briefed U.S. Sen. Johnny Isakson (Ga.), and Rep. Phil Gingrey of Marietta, Ga., Nov. 23 on plans for building a new commissary on Dobbins Air Reserve Base.

The commissary will replace those closing at Fort McPherson and Fort Gillem due to the Army installations closing in 2011. The new Dobbins commissary will provide an outlet for military personnel, retirees and their families to buy affordable goods in the metro Atlanta area. Otherwise, the closest commissary would be nearly 150 miles away at Fort Benning, Ga.

"This new commissary at Dobbins will benefit thousands of military personnel and veterans in the metro Atlanta area, and I'm pleased the construction will soon become a reality" said Senator Isakson, a member of the Senate Veterans' Affairs Committee.

The tentative site for the commissary will be near the current base exchange off Atlantic Road. There is still no confirmed date on when construction will begin. The commissary received final approval from the Undersecretary of Defense for Personnel and Readiness in September.
