Air Force survey approval process

To reduce the time and burden, please ensure your Airmen are reminded of the survey approval process for attitude and opinion based surveys. According to Air Force Instruction (AFI) 36-2601, attitude and opinion based surveys must obtain a Survey Control Number from the Air Force Survey Office at the Air Force Manpower Agency (AFMA).

The survey approval process ensures surveys meet mission requirements and fulfill the information needs of functional authorities, while avoiding duplication of efforts, over-surveying of certain populations and survey fatigue. Each survey is also carefully reviewed for OPSEC issues, Privacy Act concerns, and topics deemed off-limits by OSD, such as the current "Don't ask, don't tell" policy. Additionally, if the survey is hosted on a non-dot mil website, the survey must be approved by SAF/XCIO.

During this period of limited resources, it is extremely important to control the amount of time AF members are asked to spend on non-mission essential tasks, including surveys. Although one short survey of a small number of members may seem insignificant, one short survey from the Communications Squadron, one from Public Affairs, one from Services, one from the Medical Group, and one from Military Equal Opportunity all add up to a greater impact on Airmen's attention.

Air Force leadership looks to the Air Force Survey Office to maintain situational awareness of the quality, relevance, impact and necessity of each survey, as well as how much of our Airmen's valuable time is expended on these surveys. I would appreciate your assistance in keeping members aware of the survey approval process. Any questions can be directed to Chief Master Sgt. Mario Plocki, HQ AFRC/MET, mario.plocki@afrc.af.mil. As always, I appreciate your insights and support.
