Military members assigned here who have not yet become a U.S. Citizen should become aware of their citizenship opportunities, said Base Legal officials recently.

Under the Immigration and Naturalization Act § 329 (Requirements during Periods of Hostilities), it is possible as a reservist to apply to become a citizen during the Global War on Terror.

Here are the basic requirements:

- Honorable active duty or reserve service for at least one day during a period of hostility (such as the Global War on Terror) and, if separated, an honorable service characterization.

- Lawful permanent resident status at time of enlistment, or physical presence in the US or US territory at time of enlistment.

- Be able to read, write, and speak English.

- Have a knowledge of U.S. history and government.

- Possess good moral character.

- Attachment to the principles of the U.S. Constitution.

For those wishing to apply for naturalization, the U.S. Customs and Immigration Service has customer service specialists at its Nebraska Service Center who can help process applications and answer any questions. Their toll-free number is 1-877-CIS-4MIL (1-877-247-4645)

Reservists can also get information on this program from the Dobbins Legal Office by calling Lt. Col. Tony Kolenc at 678-655-5199.
