DBIDS IS COMING! Published Feb. 6, 2011 By Public Affairs DOBBINS AIR RESERVE BASE, GA -- Dobbins has been scheduled as the second base in the Air Force Reserve Command, after Westover Air Reserve Base, for implementation of Defense Biometric Identification System, a Homeland Security and Department of Defense identity authentication and force protection initiative. DBIDS installation here is scheduled to take place Feb. 21 through March 11 and will produce installation passes for personnel and allow a gate guard to use a hand-held wireless scanner on the bar codes of common access card and DBIDS-issued credentials. The scanners will instantly identify who the person is and whether or not they're allowed on base. All active duty, family members, DoD contractors and retirees - anyone with permanent base access - will register into the system. The 94th Airlift wing Communications, Civil Engineering, Military Personnel and Security Forces squadrons have all been meeting regularly to make this transition a success. Everybody in the reserve command is watching the 94th AW in this particular project to see how things are going, said Warren Burns, the 94th AW Security Forces security manager. We are looking toward Westover to model our initiation off of theirs. Frequently asked questions: Who needs to register? All military, family members, DoD contractors and retirees - anyone with permanent base access Where can I register and have my ID Card scanned? Registration areas will be Pass and Registration and the Force Support Squadron and will be conducted throughout an 18-month period starting in March. How is information registered into the system? To register in DBIDS, a CAC or other DoD-issued ID card is scanned into the system. The cardholder's information is verified and an electronic fingerprint is taken. The process takes about five minutes per person, the time dependent on how much information has to be entered. How long is the scanning intended to take? This process is anticipated to take less than 3 seconds. If DBIDS is temporarily inoperable, or if a gate has not been integrated, guards will check the ID cards manually.
