Dobbins participates in federal food drive Published Aug. 15, 2011 By Maj. Clare Reed 94th Airlift Wing Public Affairs DOBBINS AIR RESERVE BASE, Ga. -- Col. Tim Tarchick, 94th Airlift Wing commander, recently announced Dobbins Air Reserve Base's participation in the "Feds Feed Families" Food Drive campaign. The Defense Department is taking a leading role in a nationwide campaign challenging federal employees to donate to their local food pantries. Food banks across the country are facing severe shortages of non-perishable items. Federal employees nationwide are stepping up to meet this challenge by gathering two million pounds of food for families in need. The DOD's goal is 733,800 pounds. The "Feds Feed Families" campaign, which officially runs from May 26, through the end of Aug., is in its third year and is a White House-sanctioned program, which began as part of the 2009 United We Serve Act. For the past two years, DOD officials have collected nonperishable items and distributed them throughout the national capital region. This year, the program has been extended to DOD installations nationwide for their own local distribution. The Dobbins campaign is a Human Resources Development Council project and will be led by Capt. Darrell Bogan, Equal Opportunity director and HRDC co-chair. The food drive will run here through Aug. 27 and will support a locally managed shelter. "Our goal is to collect 1,500 pounds of non-perishable food," said Bogan. The following items are requested in the Atlanta Metro area: · Spaghetti/sauce · Canned fruit · Flour and baking mixes · Canned pasta (ravioli, spaghettio's, etc.) · Soup · Cereal · Macaroni and Cheese · Jelly · Dry beans · Rice · Canned beans · Canned vegetables (except green beans) · Canned Meat "I am excited to participate in this program," said Tarchick. "This is a great opportunity for our Airmen to show their support of the local community and give back to those in need." Collection points are marked by blue Must Ministries bins located in the 94 AW Headquarters building, the Dobbins Inn, the Dobbins Consolidated Club and the Base Exchange.
