SFS CC awarded for meritorious service while deployed Published Nov. 15, 2011 94th Airlift Wing Public Affairs DOBBINS AIR RESEVE BASE, Ga. -- Lt. Col. Timothy Martz, 94th Security Forces Squadron commander, was recently awarded the Bronze Star Medal for exceptionally meritorious service in direct support of combat operations while deployed as Chief Base Security and Base Security Group commander in Kandahar Afghanistan. While assigned to the NATO Command Kandahar Airfield (COMKAF) Headquarters, Martz commanded over 700 personnel from 9 nations. Their primary mission was to protect and defend Kandahar Airfield from insurgent attacks. Kandahar Airfield is currently the largest NATO base in the world, controlling one of the single busiest runways. In addition to the Bronze Star Medal, Martz was also awarded the NATO International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal, and a Bulgarian Mission Medal by order of the Minister of Defense of the Republic of Bulgaria for commanding 295 Bulgarian servicemembers as part of the Base Security Group and base perimeter defenses.
