Senior Master Sgt. Eric Downing, of Headquarters 22nd Air Force, received the East Cobb Rotary Club's Military Service Above Self Award on May 16 at Indian Creek Country Club in Marietta, Ga. during a ceremony honoring his commitment to community service.

Other members of the local community were also honored by the East Cobb Rotary Club from the police and fire departments and a local Georgia educator.

Col. James Linder, 22nd Air Force, was in attendance to present Downing the award. He commended Downing on living the Air Force Core Values.

"He volunteers for anything that comes up," said Linder. "As much as I appreciate him as an Air Force member, I appreciate him more as a family man, as a friend and for what he does for his community."

Downing enjoys working for his community. He coordinated a motorcycle ride for his local homeless shelter and encourages fellow Airmen to work with their communities to help those in need.

"Once you take the first step, you'll be amazed at how everything else starts happening," said Downing. "It's the little things you can do that make a big impact in someone's life. Whatever you can do, at whatever level - just go out and do it."
