Members turn over a new leaf for 2013 Published Jan. 4, 2013 By Senior Airman Christina Bozeman 94th Airlift Wing Public Affairs DOBBINS AIR RESERVE BASE, Ga. -- With each New Year, new promises are made. It's a time to reflect on the passing year and look forward to the future and lay out new plans and possibilities. Practical and less complex resolutions may be the best to start with first. "I'm a big Chicago Cubs fan," said John Mikula, 94th Airlift Wing exercise physiologist. I resolve to not get excited about my baseball team this year." Making bulk personal resolutions for ourselves seems to be popular as well. Senior Master Sgt. Florencio Lopez, 22nd Air Force acting first sergeant said, "Training for a full Ironman, helping others to pass their physical fitness test, save a lot of money and buy another rental house." Some resolutions may take the whole year to accomplish. Vow or no vow, the New Year's resolution is nothing new. These, sometime unfulfilled, promises have been taking place for thousands of years. Babylonians are believed to be the first to make New Year's resolutions; they believed that the first day of the new year should be spent reflecting on past mistakes and resolving to improve oneself in the new year. The promises don't have to be for us, but rather to strive to be better for loved ones. Col. Timothy Tarchick, 94th Airlift Wing commander, said, "I want to be a better husband for my wife and a better father to my children." Improving monetary portfolios, especially after Christmas, is always a good plan. "Invest; that's my New Year's resolution," said Capt. Tameka Alderman, 94th Mission Support Group executive officer. Society may make us feel like we're supposed to declare that we'll lose those last ten pounds or that we'll floss more. There is always the option not to give into the pressure of having a resolution at all. However, the age-old pledge to enhance ourselves isn't mandatory, but maybe it makes us feel better. Nevertheless, striving for excellence will never go out of style.
