Military Family Support Center offers grocery savings to authorized shoppers

MARIETTA, Ga. -- Authorized shoppers are welcome to shop for groceries and other household items at the next Guard & Reserve On-Site Sale July 19-21, 2018 at the Military Family Support Center, 1901 Terrell Mill Road, Ste. 200 in Marietta, Georgia. Hours of operation are Thursday and Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

According to MilitaryShoppers.com, the facility is a first of its kind in the United States. The public-private partnership opened in May 2016 with the combined efforts of the Cobb Chamber of Commerce, Defense Commissary Agency, the Georgia Department of Defense and Dobbins Air Reserve Base to bring commissary benefits to authorized active duty, Guard and Reserve members, retirees and dependents.

“When we do on-site sales, we bring grocery items to a particular location and sell them at commissary prices to authorized patrons,” said Willie Watkins, chief of eCommerce Department of Defense.

Commissaries offer many items at cost plus 5 percent. With the closest commissaries to the Dobbins ARB community being at Robins Air Force Base and Fort Benning, each over 100 mile away, the support center offers a great sense of convenience to the many veterans living in the area.

Shoppers are encouraged to come by, stock their pantries and save on fresh meat, fresh produce, frozen items and dry goods.

Cash, check, EBT, debit and credit cards including the Military Star card are accepted.

“These sales are usually held on a Guard or Reserve Base,” said Watkins. “For the first time, we are holding the sales outside of a military installation in cooperation with other agencies.”

The support center is open three days a month, usually on the third Thursday, Friday and Saturday. It also offers various services from the local community such as health screenings, Georgia driver license renewals, Veterans Affairs Administration services and more.
