DOBBINS AIR RESERVE BASE – The final count is in. The Dobbins Emergency Relief Fund received $2,004 from this year’s Corn and Sausage Roast fundraiser – more than $100 over last year’s amount.

Members of the Square and Compass Club – the organization that hosted the fundraiser – and Nancy Black, Dobbins thrift shop manager, met Aug. 17 in the wing headquarters building to count the cash proceeds from ticket sales and to formally present the thrift store’s $1,000 donation to the fund.

“This year was a success,” said Ron Durant, Square and Compass Club secretary. “Open for lunch for two hours and you turnaround $2,004. That’s a success.”

Durant said the group owes this success to the base participation in the fundraiser. This participation goes beyond those who bought tickets to attend the cookout to include the base thrift store, which is the fund’s largest donor.

The Dobbins Relief Fund helps military families with unexpected expenses while a service member is deployed.

The club will begin the planning process soon for next year’s event. They hold elections in January for new officers at which point they’ll discuss the fundraiser as an agenda item. Afterward, they begin coordinating it with the wing commander, judge advocate general and services to get approval, explained Durant.

As next summer rolls around and the grills come back out, Dobbins will be ready for the chance once again to help out fellow Airmen.
