Growing up on a family farm in South Georgia outside of the small town of Sylvester, and spending years serving the Army, Navy and Marines, Phyllis Jeter now has crossed over into the blue to serve as the 94th Airlift Wing's new director of psychological health.

Jeter is a licensed clinical social worker and has spent years working in counseling.

"Caring for our Airmen is one of our most important missions," said Col. Brett Clark, 94th Airlift Wing commander. "Unfortunately, mental health care has been overlooked and underemphasized in the past. Today, steps to improve mental health support are taking shape.  The addition of this talented mental health care professional to our 94th AW staff is direct evidence that this important initiative is more than just lip-service."

The Peach State native is looking forward to her time here.

"I love that what I do matters," Jeter said. "It's a joy seeing people's lives get better. A mission is carried out by people; and when people function well, the mission comes together better. But, the most important part is that people's lives get better."

Jeter mentioned that people have the misconception that counselors only listen to people.

"The goal is not just to listen, but to pay attention and to help you resolve and find your solution," she said.

She will be offering counseling, referrals, education and various resources.

"I have been gathering lists of resources from the different counties because they all offer different things," Jeter said.

The South Georgia native is able to provide education in substance abuse and addiction, couples counseling, anger management and suicide prevention to individuals and groups.

"This is a new position, so new parts are currently beings designed into it," Jeter added.

Jeter's office will be located at office number 1414 and can be reached at 655-3851.
